Project Visibility 24/7 is a 30 minute, highly interactive online course that teaches CNAs and staff members of nursing homes, assisted living facilities and home healthcare agencies about LGBT older adults in their care.
Project Visibility workshops have been offered since 2003 from Boulder County (Colorado) Area Agency on Aging.
Thousands have been educated as to the presence, history and circumstances of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender older adults in care. Project Visibility 24/7, Person-Centered Care for LGBT Older Adults was create for caregivers and shift workers who could not attend a workshop.
In this course, learners will understand the history of LGBT people in the United States. The widespread discrimination elders experienced in the past has created fewer resources, worse health outcomes and fear about safety that many bring with them when they enter care. Going back into the closet may be a protective reflex for many but caring staffers can demonstrate inclusion and acceptance.
